Dear Lactnetters,
I've been a hospital-based LC for a couple months in an institution where
there was no LC coverage previously. I've had a private practice for 11
years and always had the freedom to refer moms and babies on to others
when there were problems I couldn't fix. Now that I'm in a hospital,
things are different. I met with the head of Physical and Occupational
Therapy, a young OT and a speech pathologist today to see how their
services can be utilized to help breastfeeding. They were excited about
the opportunity and now we of course need a way to decide when a baby
needs to be seen by them. Do any of you in your jobs/institutions have
objective measures to define when it's appropriate to call in OT, PT, or
speech for a feeding problem in a breastfed baby? If so, can you please
let me know so we don't have to reinvent the wheel.

It was so neat to be able to say to these women that I have a network of
over 3000 to confer with concerning this question!

Warmly,
Pat Bucknell IBCLC
