As regards the discussion on soothing and swaddling: I think we would
all agree that babies are all different. Just like adults. What upsets
one, soothes another. And visa versa.
The babies that I have seen that are soothed by this type of swaddling
are easily upset, especially by touching their own face. They constantly
initiate the rooting response with their flailing fists and upset
themselves. These are babies who have often just eaten and are pooping
and peeing well and not having a weight problem.
It is like they can't stop themselves from flailing and need some help.
Swaddling, with hands down and no blanket touching their face definitely
calms these little ones. They stop screaming and look up at you as if to
say "thanks. I needed that." I hand them back to the parents and the
quiet, alert state they are now in aids in a bonding time.
This does not affect feeding times as hungry babies do not calm down
with swaddling.
Obviously this is not used constantly and not with all babies. Some
babies seem to have a more immature nervous system and require a little
calming help. I have used it for years in the nursery when needed and do
not feel it is cruel at all.
As in everything, assessment is crucial. What is needed in what
situation for what baby?
