I would love to hear from other LCs how they structure the lactation consult. I am finding that it is difficult to be comprehensive without taking too much time and wearing out mom and baby.

Would anyone be interested in sharing when they work on latch, when they work on presenting information and when they do assessment? I am flexible in that I follow the baby's cues for when to do the feeding assessment and when to help mom with latch and positioning, when to take a history and when to do an oral and breast assessment, but sometimes I find that it is difficult to get all the information I need, if I start with helping mom and baby with attachment.

Also, I have found that asking mom to try laid-back breastfeeding before the consult (when she calls to set up the appointment) has worked out best because many moms find that it takes a half hour or so (even with mother assisted laid back breastfeeding) and it wears out the baby.

Help!
