HMBANA has recently updated the Recommendations for Collection, Storage,
and Handling of Mother's Own Milk ....." It is in the process of being
printed now. As soon as they are printed they will be available for
purchase. You may email me privately for more information.
In our NICU we give the mother one pump kit. She is also given a basin
to use to clean and store the kit while her infant is in the hospital.
We do not charge for that kit because it cost under $100. We only charge
for items that are more than $100. The mother is responsible for washing
the pump kit between use with hot soapy water and then air drying in the
basin and using only that kit for themselves. We do not have them
sterilize the kit daily (I think the new guidelines reflect that). I
have them at work and can't remember all the revisions. Not that many,
but I remember discussing this issue when we were doing the revisions.
Anyway, we have not had an increase in infection rate and the cost is
extremely less because Mom gets one kit and keeps it clean. We have been
doing this for some time now
Hope this helps.
