Marie,
I think that the dietitian is on the right track. Leaving bits of
nutritious food out for baby to take on her own is probably the best
policy. Is she allowed to feed herself, or do the parents shovel it in at
the highchair/table? Is baby offered similar foods to what the family is
eating at meals?

One other question that I would have is whether there is a history of
food allergies in the family. Sometimes babies start solids slowly
because they aren't handling them well. My second born refused solids for
two months (age 6-8 mos) after getting a throat infection that didn't
clear easily; I imagine that the discomfort of swallowing solids
discouraged him for a while. Allergenic babies don't always show other
symptoms, but just seem to know. Hard to say, but a family history may be
helpful in the assessment.

Good luck!

-Lisa
