Hi all. I know the birth control pill has been discussed before, but I
have a new spin on it. I must admit, this question is for me, not a mom
I'm counselling. However, it is something I've never seen discussed
before. I know the combination pill will affect milk supply and have even
heard something about the hormones concentrating in the milk and getting
passed to the infant. This has always led me to ruling it out as a good
form of birth control for the nursing mother. However, all these comments
have been aimed at mothers nursing infants. My son is now two and (sigh)
my menstrual periods have returned (another sigh). Does the combination
pill have the same effects when the nursling is a toddler? He nurses 4
times a day and currently weighs 22 pounds. Do the hormones pose a threat
to all children nursing, or just to the tiny infants early on? Does anyone
know if the contraindication is for early postpartum or as long as nursing
continues? I've never seen this addressed. Does anyone know anything
about this? Thanks!

Linda V.
