I did some extensive searching on fibromyalgia listservs for a breastfeeding
mom several years ago with pain like you're describing. I wrote up an
extensive report on Lactnet, but when I search for it, nothing comes up prior
to 1997 and it must have been before that. My perimenopausal mind being what
it is, is there any way to access earlier Lactnet posts, oh Lacnet mothers?

As I recall, we initially didn't know if the pain was related to the
fibromyalgia or whether it might be yeast, so she was treated with
fluconazole. We eventually concluded that the pain was most likely FM
related, and I believe the most helpful thing for this mother was relatively
high doses of ibuprofen. In researching the FM listservs, I got a
significant number of replies from non-lactating women with FM-related breast
pain (I'm sure I still have them in a pile somewhere in the office, but
unfortunately, not in the filed stuff).

As an interesting aside related to fibromyalgia, I happened to be on the
elevator the other day with the surgeon who had operated on the one breast
abcess I've ever dealt with. She mentioned that although that was the only
abcess on a lactating breast she, too, had ever dealt with, she has operated
on a number of women with fibromyalgia who get abcesses under the nipple and
areola. Anybody else ever hear of this???
