Some time ago I was trying to pin down some actual numbers on how many
babies in the US die from not being breastfed, or not having been breastfed
(at all, or long enough).  It turned out the numbers hadn't actually been
crunched on this topic--just some little pieces for particular ailments,
some of them not reliable.  I wrote to a doctor named Linda Folden Palmer
because I found some stats about SIDS risks on a website she has.  She
kindly took me through some of her calculations, and she has just written
back to me (I send this in with her permission):

I've taken a quick look and it is pretty thought-provoking.  I haven't
turned my favorite household mathematics hound loose on it yet.  Have a
