In response to an earlier comment re: getting our hands involved in putting
that baby to the breast. Don't we get to know mom before we do this? and
also, get an idea of where she is with her baby? Some women are very
tentative about making the first move so having someone to help is quite a
relief. Did women of years past have midwives and nursemaids help them? Now
we have more to contend with. Not only are we missing those women at moms
side who were there to be with mom and baby for every little need but we
must deal with the effects that labor intervention and maternity settings
have had on our babies and moms and sometimes the delay/difficulty placed
on the entire breastfeeding process. If I do not see mom and baby in the
first 24 hours, then I watch and do not touch. If help is needed - I help.
"I" think "we are angels" that help women do something they want very much
to do in a social environment and sadly sometimes birthing environment that
may not support them. The thanks yous that I hear are "I am so glad you
were there to show, to guide, to support and teach. I might have quit - but
you kept me going."
If we could look back in time to the days of breastfeeding only. How do you
suppose position and latch were managed? So...goodnight to all you angels
out there!! Don't be so hard on yourselves.
