This is by far the hardest issue, making milk is a piece of cake in
comparision! The other suggestions that people have given I would echo. I
work mainly with mothers who have adopted children and in those cases
(non-newborns) it's mainly about developing the relationship between mother
and child ie building attachment so that the child can contemplate the
intimacy of breastfeeding, providing opportunity for the child to see
breastfeeding and offering the opportunity to breastfeeding...can still take
up to a year or more before child starts breastfeeding. The other thing that
has not been described is gradually making bottlefeeds more and more like
braestfeeding, feeding skin to skin etc and then threading a supplementer
tube through a bottle teat or nipple shield and holding it over the nipple
so the child is feeding at the breast...Darillyn was the first who did this
as far as I am aware and many mums have had lots of success, her story
"Nursing Julia" contains a description of this and there is also a detailed
case history in the ABA booklet on Relactation and Adoptive Breastfeeding
which LLL and ABA both sell.
It's really up to the mum in this, how long she persists for etc. Some are
absolutely incredible! There have been a number of mums who have expressed
milk, put it in a supplementer and then had the teat hook up over the breast
for months and months! I believe that LLL will be publishing one such
account (not sure if in Leaven or elsewhere) soon.
