As a veteran Nicu nurse, I  do not entirely disagree with the reason the
babies have jaundice ("the babies are not getting alot of milk..."). I'm
guessing that if you are speaking about a neonatologist, that you are
working with premature and/or sick babies. These babies are at risk for
hyperbilirubinemia due to several factors, the main ones being immature
liver, delayed oral feeding, ineffective feeding (ineffective milk removal
or infrequent feeds).
The referral to the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine, from another poster,
is right on. Check out their excellent, evidence based protocols. You can't
change the baby's maturity, but you can help both the mother and the baby
with feeding effectiveness.
