A mom on another list just sent a long post describing the devastating
results of a four day ice and snow storm in the Quebec area... Just reading
about this makes me grateful that I breastfeed- anywhere I am, my baby is
assured of getting the same, warm, safe food, fresh and always available.
Imagine with the water sanitation plant down, no electicity for
refrigeration or hot water, and no way to travel to stores, how the formula
fed babies will suffer from this storm. Okay, maybe I have a one-track
mind, but I couldn't help but think of it!

>>>>>I don't know who has seen footage of the devastation; it is unbelievable.
To all intents and purposes, the electrical infrastructure of south-east
Ontario and southern Quebec has been destroyed. High voltage corridor
transmission towers and pylons 10 storeys tall are slumped to the ground
looking like melted candles, or have been pulled over altogether. In many,
many places, _every_ electric pole on a street is snapped off as if a giant
ran a chainsaw down the street 10 feet above the ground. Transformers and
switching stations have exploded.
To all intents and purposes, the Kingston-Ottawa-Montreal triangle was cut
off from the outside world -- all highways blocked by fallen trees and live
power lines, bridges closed, no trains ... and air travel sporadic at best.
As a final cruel blow in Montreal, power was lost to their water
purification plant; there's a boil water for 5 minutes before use order,
in effect since Friday morning -- so there's not even reliably safe cold
running water now.<<<<
