Here's what I do:
When I am getting a mother started with her breastpump supplies, I include a
sheet of the baby's labels. These can be printed off the computer in sheets
whenever needed. I hand the sheet to the mother, and ask her to verify that
the information is correct and it is indeed her baby. I tell her that
several other babies may be receiving mother's milk and this is how we will
veriy that her milk goes to her baby. I show her how/where to label date and
time on these printed labels. They are peel and stick and work very well.
The baby has i.d. bands on that will match the name and medical record
number, date of birth, etc. so the nicu nurse can match the label with the
band. Ask mother to verify the labels each time she gets a new sheet.
I also ask the mother to state her name when I come into the room, to make
sure I am in the right place. Once in a while they have put a mom in a
different room than they had told me, and it was the wrong person.
