Jennifer, Thank you for sharing your story.
I have been fortunate to work with several young mothers who have gone on
to great success despite difficult odds. I am always awed and inspired.
Locally a few years ago a small group was formed and spearheaded the
building of a child care centre on school district grounds. Parents (both
mothers and fathers) attend either a self paced program or the regular
classes. They get credits for participation in parenting programs run at
the centre. They can use their children for some of their assignments
(essay writing etc). The majority of infants and many toddlers are
breastfed. Infants are fed on demand as the staff can call the mom from
class if needed by the infant. It is run by a wonderful strong woman who
has done amazing things both to support the parents in all of their
endeavors and more specifically to support breastfeeding for both emotional
and health reasons. I know this exists in many other communities and wish
it were available to all. The improved outcomes for both parents and
children are truly worth every penny and every ounce of effort.
