I took complete advantage of hurricane George. I was in Miami for
hurricane Andrew and I remember how hard it was to pick up the pieces
after the fact. This time I sent this release to all hospitals,
television stations, and radio stations. I didn't hear mention of it
on the stations I monitored, but I didn't hear mention of formula
either.

GUIDELINES FOR INFANT FEEDING DURING A HURRICANE EMERGENCY

All prenatal and postpartum mothers should be advised to breastfeed
until the crisis has passed.

Lack of refrigeration, electricity, water and other supplies render
safe bottle feeding nearly impossible.

All mothers should be advised of the following:

· Correct positioning to insure comfortable breastfeeding and adequate milk transfer · How to determine that baby is getting enough: At least two bowel movements and at least 5 wet diapers every 24 hours after the second day of life · Resources for breastfeeding help Dade County Breastfeeding Help Line (305)377-7272 or La Leche League Breastfeeding Hot Line (305)787-1115 · Women who are not interested in breastfeeding have the option of weaning after the crisis has passed Parents who are already bottle feeding should be advised to purchase a two week supply of infant formula and to discard any open unused formula after 2 hours at room temperature. Goog thing the hurricane passed Miami by with little damage. I wish great luck to those still in George's path. Heidi C. Lunn, M.S., I.B.C.L.C. Miami, Florida
