A Lactation Consultant is a "consultant" not a Primary Health Care Provider.
When an LC see a mother/baby unit and makes an assessment and plan of care, I
believe that this plan needs to be reviewed with the mother or baby's PHCP
which would include a licensed midwife, advanced practice RN, a PA, or MD.
Otherwise, if untoward events occur (such as a baby "crashing")she could be liable.
That is why LC's like other Health Care Providers carry malpractice
insurance.

When I formally had a private practice as a Lactation Consultant, I insisted
that there be documented communication between the mother or baby's PHCP and
myself. Sometimes it was necessary to collaborate with both the Mom and Baby's
PHCP. Even though I am also an RN, certified in newborn nursing with many (too
many) years experience in NBICU, I am not a PHCP and still need to
collaborate with the appropriate practitioner.

I would caution all of us to remember, we are part of the health care team,
not an independent practitioner.
