Just thought I would share this story. When I showed up at the Capitol here
in Austin to testify before the House committee on the breastfeeding in
public bill (which includes a section stating that Texas supports the needs
of the employed bfg mother) the President of Texas NOW was there. She had
not been invited, and in fact, I think our group had not even considered
inviting input from that direction -- prob. due to this unfortunate
perception that feminists dislike bfg. Imagine everyone's surprise when she
stood to speak in favor of the bill. It was just an unbeatable combination:
the feminists, the traditionalists, the health professionals, the WIC /govt.
public health people. No wonder we got that bill through!

I have always considered myself a feminist. I deplore the artificial,
ideological debates and misunderstandings which divide us. I agree with the
researcher from New Zealand who calls for exploration of the sources of this
division. My reading of women's history gives many tantalizing clues, but
this breastfeeding issue is sure a hot button.
