I think this is an example of how one size does not fit all. The
method described is certainly counter to everything recently
recommended involving getting the lower jaw far enough onto the
breast to be effective - the "asymetrical" latch. I would question
Peg's statement that LCs are split 50-50 on this. Maybe I'm not
savvy to other areas of the country, but around here (Wisconsin), I
think most of us are using the "lead with the chin" approach. It
was certainly validated by the speakers at last week's WALC
Conference. If I go by the comments on LN, it would seem that most
of those who post about latch are also using this approach.
When the approach that Pam described works, I wonder if it isn't
more a matter of using gravity to bring the tongue down than having
the chin down. I find that using a football hold with baby more in
a sitting position than a lying down position gives gravity a little
more chance to work on the tongue as well as preserving the
asymetric latch. Perhaps using the "Australian" position with baby
on top of mom - like in the self-attachment videos - would also
achieve the same end.
In the subject line I put suck training in quotation marks for a
specific reason. I have found over the years that many different
techniques have been labeled "suck training", so that expression
alone has little meaning. We need to add descriptive words so we
know what method is being discussed.
