Apropos the thread about epidurals, today in the hospital I was asked to
go out to the room of a mom who cannot walk because if her epidural. I
found this young woman, who came into the hospital perfectly healthy,
now struggling to walk with a walker. She gave birth to twins a few
days ago, and because of the epidural, cannot put any weight on one leg.
She may never be able to walk again.
She was told that the problems was not necessarily caused by the
epidural, but may have been caused by the position she delivered in. I
was curious what position she could have delivered in, given that she
had an epidural. She said that she was lying on her back with her legs
up. Hmmm, what a dangerous position!!
This is not the first time I have seen moms injured by the epidural. I
wonder if they are told this before they are offered this intervention.
In any case, she is determined to breastfeed, and I am determined to
help her succeed in spite of her handicap.
