I observed a baby with a cleft lip and palate (unilateral) I don't know to
what extent. The baby was being fed formula with a Ross premie nipple (red
nipple) with an X cross cut in it. This was reported to be the recommended
feeding method of the cleft specialist RN at a Children's Hospital. I saw it
in writing, her protocol that is. Staff declined to use my Haberman. This
astounded me. To my knowledge the mother was never approached about bf or
giving ebm to her baby (I could be wrong). Would anyone care to comment on
the effectiveness and particularly the safety of feeding such a baby with
such a nipple? Maybe I'm just not aware that this is a good approach.
