I understood that it isn`t the precise measuring of food that is the issue 
with PKU but that the infant must not have natural protein so even a 
symbolic breastfeeding may be harmful.  I am not an expert in this field so 
don`t quote me on this.  But I do know that the consequences of undiagnozed 
PKU can be disastrous and irreversible in terms of brain development.  So I 
think the task of a counsellor is to reinforce the importance of giving the 
infant the correct diet (without scaring them out of their wits).  The 
mother does not have to lose out on skin-to-skin and everything else 
associated with bonding and mothering.

What advice would you give a mom (and grandmom) whose hearts are breaking 
with the news that the otherwise healthy infant had a positive PKU test?
They are being told everything must be measured so the baby cannot go to the 
breast.  Or they can feed the newborn 2 oz of Pku formula, then put the baby 
to breast--when obviously the baby would not take the breast or might take 
it then vomit from the overload of milk...
