Dear Jennifer,

I read your post with dismay and anger at the insensitivity shown this mom
who should be given nothing but kudos and support for all her loving, hard work
in giving herself to her baby.

"Also, the ped was very unhappy about his weight, and told mom that she had
"long out-lived her usefulness" pumping milk for this baby and that it was
inappropriate for him to still be getting breastmilk." How horribly insensitive
this statement is and also the one you mention that "friends make bad
doctors."

Can mom skim some hindmilk and give to baby? Might she be able to contact
one of the milk banks for hindmilk? An adoptive mom I work with recently
received colostrum for her newborn baby and I must admit I was pleasantly surprised
that such specific milk was available from the Bank.

Is she working with a nutritionist who could recommend specific calorie dense
solids to give him in addition to the likely life-saving breastmillk he's
receiving? I think the developmental pedi owes this mom, and you, an apology.
Perhaps, she's just reacting to baby's weight but I think she needs to know the
impact of her words. And another thought, since this baby just started
taking milk from a bottle, how about seeing if breastfeeding is possible to begin
working on, if not too much for mom and baby stress wise. Certainly know that
your concern and help is not "bad" but more than likely, has been this mom's
saving grace; keep up the good work.
