Dear Friends:
A recent research study (by Gill in JOGNN 30(4) 2001)
found that mothers expected that someone would stay with them and help them
to breastfeed., especially with the first breastfeed.
Now what is usually going on during that first breastfeed? Mother's vital
signs and baby's being measured; paperwork filled out; getting ready to move
dyad up to the postpartum unit; dealing with new admissions and other
patients......
Study also found that mothers asked for help, even when having problems.
The burden is not on the new mother....the burden is on us who are there,
and who know what to do to help her.
Warmly,
Nikki Lee RN, MSN, Mother of 2, IBCLC, CIMI, CCE
