Ann,

From the International Formula Council web site:

http://www.infantformula.org/faqs.html#10

Q. Should I Use An Infant Formula Product Beyond Its Expiration Date?

A. No. All infant formula containers carry "use by" or "use before" dates to
ensure that the consumer receives a wholesome, high-quality product. Formula
should not be bought or fed beyond the expiration date. After the expiration
date, some vitamin levels decrease and changes in physical properties, such
as discoloration and separation of fat, may occur. Infant formula companies
have a reimbursement program covering outdated products and company policy
encourages stores not to sell outdated products. Any formula that is
out-of-date at the time of purchase should be returned to the store from
which it was purchased for exchange or reimbursement.

Subject: expired formula

At the hospital I work one of the staff was informed by a parent that they
noticed the formula they were given was expired. When the staff notified
the
pediatrician they were advised that formula was still good up to 6 months
after
the expiration date.
This is so amazing how this pediatric group is so casual with formula
expiration dates but alarmed at the mother ingesting any medication with
potential
harm to the infant. :-(
Can anyone give me some data to counter this claim?
Thanks,
Ann Perry, RN IBCLC
