Seems like insurance companies are creating more and more hoops to jump
through to provide hospital-grade pumps for our moms of premature or ill infants.
Today, we were faxed a copy of a protocol for breast pump coverage. They
defined heavy duty, hospital grade pumps as not for in-home use and therefore not
eligible for Durable Medical Equipment. I plan on writing the Medical
Director of the insurance co. as I think their definition of a hospital-grade pump
is incorrect.
I have tried to find research studies that specify the importance of a
hospital-grade pump and have not been able to locate any. Even the AAP
recommendations do not discuss the type of pump that should be used.
Any ideas about where I can find info to justify the need for a
hospital-grade pump for these moms.
