well. Just got this (how quick!!!!) havent had much of a chance to look at it
*but* the front has these scribbly little drawings of nursery monitors, teddy
bears, pacifiers, a Jand J style bottle, and a t-bear. THe back has authors
credentials and web address and photo--nice looking smiling lady, looking off
camera. Her credentials:

author of A New Mothers HOme COmpanion '95: Host on Parentsoup CHat/internet,
consultant to Seventeen mag and

is THE (their emphasis) docor called on by companies that want to reach
parents--from Triaminic to Johnson and Johnson to Gerber Foods. HA!

Quick glance at the inside--nursery procedure is still *withhold all feeds
for 4 hours * but for *first feed and also second,* is given only water, plain
sterile, followed by glucose water/ just as in some cultures the midwife will
prepare a solution usinig whatever sugar is on hand, maybe beet sugar...The
nurses too will be... doing some of the routine care (diapering, bathing,
feeding) that will be taken over by you very soon. Generally the baby resides
in the nursery and visits you every 4 hours.

Urk. Did I say she signed the title page, Best wishes and Sweet Dreams? (its
a real signature) THe VERY front of the book though is a place for mom to put
in data such as apgars, type of birth (forceps) and Feeding TYpe (guess which
is listed to fill in first?)

And---she (or somebody) went through the infant feeding section with a yellow
highlighter!!!! "I am in favor of breast-feeding for the woman who wants
to>"

I can't stand it, i don't know if I will be able to read the whole thing..I do
not need to to know I cannot recommend it

"Rememberthat you do not have to be a rooming-in mother to be a real
mother....you *can* choose to have the baby with you practically all the time
(the exception is visiting hours) :'< "I playfully tell mothers: Ask and
you shall receive--your baby. This is your baby;possession and ownership
reside with you.

"IM firmly opposed to letting brand new newborns nurse for as long as they
want to. You will irritate your nipples, you will be exhausted, and you'll
barely know when one feed ends and the next begins."
"After 2 weeks or so...she can extract 90% of the milk in 3-5 minutes...baby
neds time to digest. If you feed your baby for very long periods you are
inviting a baby version of INDIGESTION"

Im getting so disgusted i cant type.

"Some good news is thta breast fed babies tend to fall asleep easily after a
feeding. the bad news is they wake up about every two or three hours because
they are hungry again. On the other hand, bottle fed abies can take on a
larger load of calories per ounce of milk (breastmilk has fewer calories per
ounce) and frequently sleep 3 or 4 hours at a time."

SHe also says bottlefeeding allows mom to get her figure back quicker which is
not one ive seen a lot lately--it does allow you to diet, you arent FORCED to
eat a good diet (another one of her paternal bits of advice)

Somehow, she has had breastfeeding moms in her practice, enthusiastic ones, by
the quotes, but it seems to me it would be in spite of her support, not
because of it. A lot of it is in the tone of the advice...not always the
advice itself.

I'd go to her webpage, but as I keep saying, we are as yet
webless....www.drpaula.com
