I am a BSN active duty Navy nurse who transferred from a hospital in
California to a major medical center on the east coast. My background in
California was a Level II nursery and a Mother-Baby Unit. I now work in
the NICU. I was very frustrated when I first moved here. I came from a
hospital with lots of breastfeeding support, to a hospital that is not
breastfeeding friendly. Many of the nurses I work with are not
interested in helping mother's breastfeed and prefer to take the easy way
out. I have tried not to "rock the boat" too much, but it is very
frustrating. It is difficult to work all day with a mother and get her
psyched about BF, get the baby started and find out on follow up that
other RNs had bottle fed the baby and breastfeeding had not progressed.
After attending a week long course, I feel stronger than ever about
promoting and helping mom's to breastfeed. This is a tough crowd,
though. How can I encourage BF with a group of highly trained, highly
experienced (much more so than myself) nurses who are set in their ways?

I was glad to get onto this Email line and attend the class to find out
that all of the east coast is not behind the times. Hats off to Fort
Belvoir Army Hospital for their BF support!
