I do not know if anyone can truly claim to have THE ONE definition of
Attachment Parenting. However, Attachment Parenting International - the only
organization whose sole focus is to promote and teach attachment through
parenting has a MUCH BROADER DEFINITION of Attachment Parenting than
babywearing, breastfeeding etc.

At According to Attachment Parenting International, These are the 8
principles of attachment parenting:

1. Prepare for Pregnancy, Birth and Parenting
2.Feed With Love and Respect
3.Respond with Sensitivity
4. Use Nurturing Touch
5. Engage in Nighttime Parenting
6. Provide Consistent Loving care
7.Practice Positive Discipline
8. Strive For balance in Personal and Family Life

This is not about breastfeeding or babywearing, or not hitting your kids.
EVERYONE can ask themselves how they are doing in these areas? Am I feeding
my child with love and respect (if I am not holding my baby while bottle
feeding)? Am I responding with sensitivity (when my baby is crying alone in
a crib)? Am I providing consistent loving care?

This is attachment parenting. Not an arbitrary list of behaviors
(babywearing, breastfeeding, not spanking, etc). The API staff, volunteers
and leaders have worked VERY hard to reframe the principles of attachment
parenting. Before, it was about the parenting behaviors above, now it is
about what we were trying to accomplish using those tools. Babywearing,
breastfeeding etc, are TOOLS for the above principles. Not the only tools,
but some tools. Attachment parenting looks different for every family. It is
a very inclusive philosophy. It's just natural human interaction and
development. The founders Barbara Nicholson and Lyssa Parker have a book
coming out soon that explains and expounds upon all of these principles and
issues.

Please go to Attachmentparenting.org for more information.

I don't work for API - I just believe in it. :)
