Fio,
It might be worth mentioning to this mum that it may still be possible for
her little one to breastfeed, just as he has moved from the Haberman to a
normal bottle, he may move from the bottle to the breast given encouragement
and opportunity. Today I heard from an adoptive mum I had talked to about
breastfeeding just before she travelled to adopt a toddler from China about
3 months ago. Her daughter, now over 2 years is breastfeeding to sleep and
for comfort. I hadn't heard anything from her in the interim, I assumed that
she had decided not to try breastfeeding (people had told her it would be
stressful to her daughter). It was such a lovely surprise to hear that she
decided to breastfeed and that her little one came to the party. It made my
day especially since she is a local mum. I suspect that for a while there I
was the only adoptive mum breastfeeding in Australia! There are a few I know
at the moment.
The thing with working with older babies with multiple issues (as adopted
children often have as the baby you describe) is that time is a necessary
part of the solution. All the tricks in the book won't work unless the
timing is right, so every trick is worth trying multiple times over time!
but always with respect for the child.
Anyway, the mum you know may or may not be interested but it's worth
mentioning.
