I had a really nice suprise the other day. The early intervention playgroup
that I attend with my daughter went through with us all and gave us all a
copy of their universal precautions/ infection control policy. They are
pretty cautious because some of the kids that attend can be medically frail.
Anyway after Nappy change, Nose wiping, mouthed toys and handwashing
procedures is Supporting breastfeeding as an effective infection control
policy. I'll just quote it, some of you might find it useful.

"Breastfeeding

Supporting breastfeeding in the child care service is another effective
infection control strategy. Breast milk contains antibodies which help
protect the young child from infection.

'There is a direct relationship between the antibody protection of human
breast milk and the lowered incidence of gastro-intestinal illness, ear
infections, eczema, upper respiratory tract illness, insulin-dependent
diabetes, neurodevelopment impairment and SIDS in breastfed infants' (Drane
1994)

Breastfeeding also eliminates the need to sterilize bottles and make up
formulas- thereby reducing the likelihood of transmitting infection."

Now don't you reckon that it's great. I think it's fantastic that they
included it and they certainly don't pull any punches about why it would be
important.
