Hi Ladies,

I just signed on a couple of weeks ago, and I have learned a lot!
(Though admittedly overwhelmed by the volume of this list.) Quickly,
about myself, I am a Childbirth/Lactation Educator and doula, married 10
years, two kids (breastfed for 4+ years and miss it).

I am writing to you with a question about an anti-depressant called
Selexa (I do not know the formal drug name). Apparently it is in the
Prozac family and is fairly new on the market. I know this because I
was just contacted by a woman with a 10 month old who is breastfeeding
and being treated for prolonged depression. Doc said it would be safe
with breastfeeding, but mom is not sure and this is why:

She started taking drug (20mg/day) on 11/6. Approx 2 weeks ago her baby
started biting her and bruising her badly enough she didn't want to
nurse. She didn't want to stop breastfeeding so she thought she would
pump and give her breastmilk in a bottle. Using the Medela Pump N Style
she has pumped for two weeks and intermittently tried nursing (Baby
still biting). She no longer feels let down, her breasts don't feel
full at any time of the day or night, and in the last few days has only
pumped a few ounces combined; eg. 5 oz total for the day yesterday, and
one ounce for today. Mom is pumping several times a day for 5-10
minutes at a time.

Mom has not noticed a change in her depression since starting the drug
(and I am sure this 'low' supply problem isn't helping), and she says
the baby's stools are darker and clumpy (her words, I haven't seen it).
I asked if she was really wanting to continue nursing at the breast or
if she was looking to wean her. She said she didn't want to give her
formula at all, she was OK with the pumping if "it worked", and would
nurse her if she wouldn't be biten again, but she was worried the baby
might draw blood the next time.

Any suggestions besides getting her pump checked for suction problems
and pumping for a longer period and perhaps more frequently.

She feels a little desperate (2 messages on my machine, 5 pages) while I
was gone for the holidays, so if you could post back as soon as
possible?

Warmly,

Lisa Simpkins
