Hi Nancy,

I recently helped a mom with a simular situation. Of course having an
infant in NICU/Premie is stressful enough in its self. This mom had not
gotten or was not using proper pumping technique. The flang was too small,
vacume too strong and rate too fast. She dreded pumping but wanted to
provide milk for baby.

Has your mom been assessed for proper pump fit and use? Is she using the
Symphony pump to cycle more "normally like a nursing baby"? Does she had a
support system? Her symptoms sound very simular to an anxiety attack.

Things to consider: Relaxation techniques, check for proper pump fit and
use, check pump for malfunction. If the Symphony pump is not available in
your area (not for rent in our area) she might try using manually "Cyclic
Pumping". Recently after being notified that no one in our area would be
carrying the Symphony pump, I wrote a one page hand out to be used with the
Lactina pump. I have had good results with it . I would assume that it
would work with other pumps as well. I have not tried with any others.
The last thing might be to see if she could have something prescribed for
her stress and anxiety, it might help.

These moms need a LOT of support and encouragement and reassurance. Hope
this helps.

Subject: Unusual symptoms when pumping

The Mom of one of our premies stopped pumping because of a recurring feeling
of tunnel vision, increased anxiety and irritability each time she started
to
pump. She tried for several days, but just gave up because the feelings
were
unbearable. She has no history of psychiatric disorders, medications or
sexual abuse that we could ascertain.
Any ideas?
