Julie, we both agree that words can hurt. But since we can’t keep ourselves or our children in a cocoon, the best approach is to teach critical thinking, don’t you agree?

It is not helpful to enable self-pity about what someone else has said, when someone else’s choice of words are entirely outside of our control. We can teach that what someone says about us may or may not apply. It is up to each of us to decide this. It’s a thought process, not a feeling.

Have we noticed that there are many women who both bottle feed formula and have not a bit of guilt? Don’t you think many (most?) of them have been exposed to numerous variations of “Breast is Best?” While some mothers may hear “Breast is Best” and think someone is “trying to make them feel like less of a mother,” others hear it and shrug their shoulders and go on.
