Alice Farrow asked:

>I wonder how long 'breast compression' has been used to define the
technique to increase milk flow by pressing a specific area of the breast.
Was Jack Newman the first to use the expression, or was it already used
before that? It might predate the article you read?<

The practice of increasing the flow of milk by putting pressure on the
breast certainly pre-dates Jack's article, although he was the one to
popularize it and give it the name we use today. In fact, I remember
writing to him to say that I had been using the same technique for years,
and calling it "priming the pump." However, I certainly did not invent it!
I got the idea from watching my cats knead, and tracing that behaviour back
to kittens pummeling their mothers while nursing. Of course human infants
do that too, and toddlers have been known to talk to the breasts while
doing so, urging them to flow faster.

There is not much that is new under the sun, although fashions change :)
