There was a talk on this at the LLLI Physicians conference in San
Diego. The topic was about the misconception that we shouldn't
promote breastfeeding too much or we will make women feel guilty. I
don't have my notes here with me (but can look them up tomorrow).
Essentially, though, the speaker said that women want information,
but they don't want directives. I think that was the important
difference she was making. They want to make their decision as
informed consent, but not feel that they are being told what to do.
This, of course, is talking about prenatally and nobody is suggesting
making women who chose not to breastfeed feel badly after they have
already made that choice. I realize there will always be some who
will take it as a "should" do when it is just an effort to present
information and I agree that they are probably going to feel guilty
anyhow and are looking for someone to blame.
