Hi Diane
You said, " As far as I've seen and heard, a generation ago breastfeeding
tended to work". And " A generation ago, our babies just did it. "  These
seem like romantic conclusions to me.  Of course breastfeeding worked for
the mothers who breastfed.  Of course their babies just did it - if they
didn't, they got bottle fed because there was little skilled help around.
You only have the success stories and, given the statistics of the of day,
they're outliers, aberrations even.
Being willing and able to educate oneself (here, THE book was Successful
Breastfeeding by our own Virginia (Phillips) Thorley); getting in touch with
mother to mother support (here it was The Nursing Mothers Association) and
being willing to swim against the established wisdom of the 'health'
industry (who were and often still are telling mothers that breastfeeding
doesn't really matter) were and still are the keys to breastfeeding success.
