Four years ago, I was a pregnant mom in a hospital-sponsored
childbirth class. The class consisted of two separate
parts--childbirth and epidurals.

What was emphasized in the childbirth section:
1)complete your paperwork early and mail it in
2)all the required interventions (hospital policies)
3) the importance of fetal monitoring
4) be sure to grab one of each formula diaper bags when you leave.

The epidural class was considered "informed consent" for the epidural
and was taught by an anesthesiologist. They also showed you the
paperwork that you would need to sign to consent during labor.

They talked about how it was done, you wouldn't feel pain, etc. They
glossed over side effects in less than 3 minutes.

Then it was Q and A time. I asked about the effect of drugs on the
baby. I was told that there was no possible way for drugs to get to
the baby, since the epidural is injected into a "space". It can't get
into the bloodstream! WHAT??? Everyone else was sitting there
smiling and nodding, while I picked my jaw off the floor.

No wonder moms don't have a clue, if this drivel is presented as "education"
