Kathy Boggs posted on the rationale for encouraging a robust supply early
on, which matches my experience well: it's easier to reduce supply than to
increase it after some weeks have passed. For those of us who live in a
metric world, the amounts in the case in question may not appear so dramatic
until we convert them from ounces.
12 oz. is approximately 350 ml. and if a mother is pumping that much every
two hours, that is 4.2 litres daily, or over a gallon. Most mothers don't
produce this much, and when you run across one who does, you just pray there
is a milk bank nearby and that they will accept her as a donor.
