Hi Barb

You don't say what the baby weighed at birth - not critical, but it would
be of interest.

Once full-term babies are launched, say at around 10 days of age, they can
receive 180 ml/kg/day, up from 150 ml/kg/day. This baby would be an
effective 38 weeks corrected gestational age, so that's more or less
full-term and 3 kg is big enough to be treated as full-term. I'd suggest
that he needs 540 ml in each 24 hours. Asking a newborn to go 4 hours
between feeds is too long, so I'd suggest feeding every 3 hours, and
offering 70 ml each time. If mom wants to stick to the four-hour routine,
then he should have 90 ml at each feed. He should gain at the rate of 30g
per day. Or more. If he *has* in fact been receiving less milk than he
would like you might expect that he will become very "demanding" once he
realizes that food is available, and may want more than 70 ml every 3
hours, and may then gain more than 30g per day. That's absolutely fine -
just go for it. I've worked with pre-terms who became very greedy, taking
up to 280 ml/kg/day and gaining over 75g per day - exclusive breastfeeding
- no additives. Wonderful to see!

Any chance that the mom might think of breastfeeding direct at some stage??

Wishing you all a great conference in Hobart, sorry to miss it!!

Pamela
