Subject: Breastmilk, average intake

"I'd also like to know what others tell mothers is the average amount of
breastmilk needed per 24 hours at various ages."
Thank you,
Anne Grider, IBCLC

Milk intake is such a difficult message to get through to mothers (and hospital staff). I can see the eyes of the nursing staff roll when I discuss baby's stomach size, and the "Thanksgiving dinner they get with formula that puts them to sleepy." It is difficult when a newborn will take 2-4 ounces after breastfeeding and as Mom's states "she must have been starving, because after that bottle she finally went to sleep."

There is a good chart on http://www.beststart.org/resources/Breastfeeding/ then click on breastfeeding your baby- poster, but it does not give any references.
