Dear all:

Laurie reiterated in different terms what I meant by what the research shows. Vouchers to buy local products would be far better and more cost effective than centralized distribution of a single brand of a product. This is unfair competition.

Just as when women have to declare themselves as either "formula feeding" or "breastfeeding". Recently I had the annoying experience with a mother who was mostly breastfeeding. She didn't want to give up the formula because she needed a tiny bit of formula. She wasn't allowed to get a pump to bump up her supply because she was classified as a formula feeder. I have to say the WIC office responded immediately when I told her to go back and say she had seen me and she got the pump. The hard thing for her to comprehend was that the minimal amount she would have had to give up by not taking the formula was more than compensated by the reduction in costs when she was allowed to have the pump. Many women say they are formula feeding so they can get the formula "just in case" rather than based on "true need".

Best, Susan Burger
