I think Barbara Wilson-Clay and I are talking about almost the same
positoning for babies with small jaws and short tongue; we are just using
slightly different language. Probably because of my OT background, I imagine
a certain positon with the words "extended head" than most non-therapists.
All in all, I think it is important to do whatever works to get the tongue
protruded as far as possible, paying attention always to how the rest of the
baby's body is positioned. Remember that the mouth is connected to the neck,
which is connected to the trunk, which is connected to the hips and feet and
arms, etc. Sometimes an unconventional position works best- but if it isn't
broken, don't fix it. I am very curious as to what happened to this baby
with the short, heart shaped tongue- could the person who origionally posted
this interesting case post a follow up for all of us inquireing minds who
want to know?
