Hi Linda! You stated in your message that:

We discussed the topic of "insurance pumping" a few weeks back on Lactnet. I
agree with your statement of assessing the baby more closely....in fact, I
often describe this to the moms as I'm assessing the flow rate.....because its
relevance is in the reaction of the baby. I tell them how the baby handles it
is what's important. And I then proceed to educate the mom on reading baby's
cues for handling or not handling the flow with an effective suckling pattern
or not. This way she will learn when and how to respond to the situation.

Now, our discussion a few weeks back was specifically geared around shield
use and when folks advise women to pump to ensure the milk supply is retained.
What are your thoughts regarding how often and when would you recommend this
mom pumps? Many responses to the original question seemed to reflect that
folks don't often encourage moms to pump.
