Hi, Jean: Would it have been possible to have the hospital's speech
therapist do a feeding evaluation on this baby before discharge? I have
seen them work wonders on issues such as the tongue issue this baby is
dealing with. Our hospital recently hired a part-time speech therapist who
does feeding evals on our NICU babies on Monday mornings. The rest of the
week she works at the hospital system's peds clinic. She has (by her own
admission) very little training or knowledge of breastfeeding but is eager
to learn and asked to accompany me on rounds when she is in the hospital on
Monday mornings. I'm really excited to be collaborating with her. Our PT
and OT have more breastfeeding experience and have also been eager for
referrals, but their areas of expertise lie more in positioning, etc.,
whereas our new speech therapist is trained specifically to deal with mouth
issues. I think therapists are way underutilized in lactation and we could
all benefit from their expertise.
