We've used the LATCH tool for years and found it very helpful.  We score
each baby each shift and if a baby scores 7 or less at discharge... they
should have alactation consult.  Also on our standard care plan for
breastfeeding moms/babies they should have a score of 8-10 at discharge.
The LATCH tool isn't perfect as I'm sure you have read, but it really has
made our nurses more aware of what a good feeding is.  Good luck.  One of my
friends who uses the tool in their hospital, and they have changed the tool
a little, they use the T of LATCH to mean time... for latch.  If the mom
takes less then 5 minutes to get infant latched she gets score of 2 if it
takes 5-15 minutes they get 1.  If it takes longer then 15 min. or unable
they get 0.
