Aida,
Sure I have the time! Well, sort of.
Anyway, Chele Marmet did a suck evaluation on Ben, he was about 2 mo. old.
In this evaluation, she discovered that he had, what she called a 'Bubble'
palate, and that whenever she positioned her finger at the meeting of the
hard and soft palate, Ben gagged. The 'bubble' palate is best described like
this: An average baby palate is fairly flat. A bubble palate is shaped like
a "U" . Ben's palate goes stright up after the gum ridge then goes straight
back down to the soft palate. Ben got so used to having my nipple in that
"U" during the 1st 2 weeks of nursing (before I had to quit) that whenever a
bottle nipple or a finger doing a suck test went to the soft palate, he
gagged. So we had to train him to get used to having something (my finger)
touching his soft palate while he was sucking. We also used the ortho nipple
from Medela turned upside down, so it would touch that soft palate, as well.
It took a while, but he finally got used to it. Then, when we put him back
to breast, he had no problems taking the nipple back to where it belonged,
thank God! I had to be really careful about positioning, but it was worth
it. He's a great little nurser now!
Just an extra note, I was feeling Ben's palate the other day to see if it had
flatened out at all, no chance there, and felt a ridge right down the center
of his palate. It's no wonder he caused so much damage! That's a rough
little palate he's got in there! Also, Ben's palate shape is genetic. My
palate is very high as is my husbands. Other family members also have high
palates, too. {We're just a bunch of 'Bubble' heads over here! :) } My
older son's palate isn't as drastic as Ben's which is prob'ly why he and I
didn't have these prob's 9 years ago.
Anyway, I gotta go make dinner. Hope I've answered your questions! If you
have more, please feel free to ask!
Take it easy!
Janet
Queen of the Bubble Palate Family! :o)
