Hi Mary,
I was also thinking of recommending weaning from that breast as *one*
option. If mother does not want to do this, I would suggest maybe chronic
low dose antibiotic therapy. I would send her to infectious disease doc if I
could. Also possibly having mother wash with some type of antibacterial
product. In the old days, I think something like Phisohex was a brand used,
which I think was discontinued due to hexachlorophene (spelling) which was
found not to be safe???
Anyway, not sure if this sort of protocol is still done, but maybe a
betadine (iodine) wash of some type???
Have these wounds been cultured (surely)? And, if so, this can help to
determine what antibiotic to use.
I would want to know what factors she can identify that precipitate these
episodes. How is her general health, anemia? general diet and nutrition
status?
She may have a physical / mechanical / anatomical variation in that breast
that hinders its drainage.
