Thoughts on birth control via lactational amenorrhea
method (LAM), in response to Crystal's inquiry:
As far as I have been able to determine, there is no
"magic number" of nursings per day that will guarantee
suppression of ovulation. Some researchers have
looked into the total amount of TIME spent with baby
at breast, per day, that was effective, but I was
unable to find any definitive answer in my own
reading. Since the length of nursing
sessions/feedings can vary through the day, current
research does suggest that time may be a factor in
delaying fertility, rather than frequency/number of
nursings. I had my first postbirth period at the 6
month mark, while still exclusively BFing, probably
triggered by 2 nursing strikes due to teething in the
weeks prior. There is no way of knowing if that cycle
was ovulatory or not.

I think it is important to remember that women,
despite exclusive breastfeeding, may release eggs
PRIOR to the onset of menses. I think any woman
considering LAM needs to be fully educated in its use
and its risks. She needs to examine closely what her
feelings and circumstances would be if she became
pregnant again at that time.

If any Lactnetters have new info on LAM, I am
interested!
Sincerely,
