I have been sending things to Lactnet but not seeing them in the digest?
Hmmm...let's try again.
Carol,
These OLD studies refer to the use of the "mexican hat" nipple shield (red
rubber) by Mike Woolridge, and one that escapes me right now about LATEX
nipple shields. Both are from the late 80's or so. Since the NS that are on
the market now are silicon, I don't believe we can make these blanket
statements. You can use the information from May 2002 JHL by Paula Meier to
refute these claims. Her study (with Jan Engstrom from Rush) shows increased
suckling efficiency and milk intake in PREMIES for heaven's sake. So a full
term baby with an intact suck may do even better. Your data shows that. There
may be a study by Auerbach somewhere supporting the use of a silicone shield,
I'll look later today.
I hear of this sometimes, when a new LC or CLE uses "what the books
say" as a reason not to do something that we, who have experiential
knowledge, know works. Isn't that the difference between novice and expert? I
use them too, for different situations and am thankful that we have such a
good selection of products to choose from now.
