We found this in a NICU baby several years ago. The culprit was not the breast milk - sample was cultured and not there. It was transferred from a plant (Serratia lives in dirt) to pump equipment from the handles of the sink. Teaching mothers "aseptic" technique for handling pumping equipment fixed the issue. This means separate tub for washing of equipment, no handling the faucets with bare hands, setting up towels for post-washing drying and covering and clean hands throughout.

Subject: Serratia marcescens

I have found some information about the pepto or bright pink milk and S. Marcescens and even watched the "Mystery Diagnosis" clip on Discovery. I'm wondering if anyone has worked with a patient or in a facility where a nursing mother cultured positive for S. Marcescens and knows what you do with the milk that they express, or what to do about continuation of breastfeeding. I would like information about both scenarios of baby testing positive or negative when there's a positive milk culture.

Thank you in advance,

Erin Moore IBCLC, RLC
